Our cells contain 46 chromosomes; just two determine our natural gender. As soon as we are born, we are named XX or XY, and then we carry the expectations of our gender with us for life.
Fortunately, DNA is not destiny, and awareness is our choice to make.
The mission of the 22s is to create vital, supportive spaces for the men of Wharton to share their experiences of gender. By resisting the urge to judge immediately, and embracing humility and respect, we believe we can equip ourselves to make the fight for gender equality a shared purpose for men and women at all levels of society.
We came to Wharton because we shared a drive to be strong leaders in business and society after graduation, and it is easy to imagine how committing to this mission will bring meaning to our professional lives. Still, we know that the greater reward is for our individual selves: greater gender equality means we will be more fulfilled as individuals, and thus happier in our relationships with our loved ones in the future.
We are inspired and humbled by the generations of self-empowered women who have paved the way for men like us to become self-empowered, as well, because all of our voices matter. We realize that men and women both suffer the consequences of continued disparity, so we aspire to share the responsibility of making gender equality a reality for everyone.
